The Alexandrian Authority is a trademark of Shiman Associates Inc. SAI's proprietary knowledge-and-document management system is called the Alexandrian Authority because SAI recognizes associations with its namesake ancient city on Egypt's Mediterranean coast. Ancient Alexandria was home to several wonders, including a lighthouse whose flame-mirrored beacon could be seen by ships 40 miles distant. More importantly, Alexandria was the site of the greatest library of classical antiquity, the repository of the aggregated knowledge of the known world. Ancient historians believed that no manuscript was available in any library worldwide that was not available in Alexandria. SAI's intentions for our software system are similarly grand. The Alexandrian Authority system was born out of the frustration participants in the deregulated utilities industry experienced when they tried to discover the source and lineage of the ever-growing number of documents generated on behalf of current restructuring efforts. Such documents represented incremental (and frequently uncredited) steps on the way to a complete statement. But after wide distribution and concomitant changes to document names because of a tweak here and a twist there, few participants knew where such documents stood in the overall plan. SAI's Alexandria Authority provides a method for document storage, retrieval, and commentary in a networked collaboration environment. Visit the Alexport, a site developed by SAI to provide access to and information about the Alexandrian Authority. |
